The Importance of Follow-up ECGs in Patients with Long QT Syndrome (LQTS)

By Ilan Goldenberg, MD and Arthur J. Moss, MD

International LQTS Registry

University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY

A new study from the International LQTS Registry demonstrates the importance of following-up LQTS subjects continuously with serial ECGs, usually at yearly intervals, for assessing the risk of future LQTS-related cardiac events (including syncope, and near-sudden, or sudden death). The study shows that the QTc values on serial follow-up ECGs are substantially more important in identifying future risk than a single baseline measurement, since the risk in this genetic disorder is not constant, and may change with time. Garrett, Steve and
The Long QT Briefcase

Steve uses his briefcase to keep all of the information he'sGarrettSteveBriefcase collected from the very beginning on Garrett's suspected Long QT syndrome. He stores contact numbers, appointments, Garrett's medical records, and family EKG's. Steve also stores articles he's researched over the internet, and has the CARE packet handy for reference. He keeps a log book on events and the date, including personal notes. The briefcase is ready to go at a moments notice. Steve keeps the briefcase in his truck at work, so he has it handy if he needs to access any information when communicating with Dr's, nurses, hospitals and of course, Mary Jo!  (Click Here to View Larger Image)

With a background in geology, photographer Rick Ruggles is trained to notice nature's patterns and shapes. Several years ago, his eye was drawn to an unusual heart-shaped pothole, sparking an idea for a special Valentine's gift. Inspired by that single image, Rick began seeing hearts in leaves on the ground, in clouds in the sky, and rocks on the beach. To date Rick has photographed thousands of "found hearts" exactly as he finds them in nature and everyday places.

Rick is a great friend of the C.A.R.E. Foundation, encouraging us all to walk through life looking for what's positive and beautiful in the most simple of things. We are delighted to bring you his images as part of our "C.A.R.E. for your heart all year long" campaign to increase awareness and prevention of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest. C.A.R.E. T-shirts and bookmarks are available on-line at www.longqt.org.  For more of Rick's images, visit www.foundhearts.com. Mention C.A.R.E. when you order items and Rick will make a donation to the foundation.
